Chapter Fourteen

It was almost seven o’clock when he pulled into the driveway. Charlie hadn’t anticipated staying so late at the office and he was beginning to feel as if he was living there more than at the farm. He was putting in twelve to thirteen-hour days at the produce company and the farm was starting to show signs of abandonment. He had a wonderful group working there and there was no question that they could manage the entire place without him, but they didn’t have the authority to make some of the bigger decisions. Charlie had to be around for that and these days he wasn’t around much at all. He tried to field the calls the best he could, but without actually being on the farm, he couldn’t do much from his office chair. It had always been a struggle to make sure that he wasn’t letting one side of the business stumble for too long before focusing his attention back to it, but he’d been so focused on the deliveries that at some point the farm would weaken and wouldn’t produce as much. There was a real fear that one day in the future, there would be nothing to deliver. It was far off in the future, thankfully, but he wasn’t enjoying this new pattern of putting one side of the business ahead of the other. He needed some help. He tried to involve Rachel in more of the workload, but training her was proving to be time-consuming and she didn’t seem as interested in taking on more responsibilities as he had hoped. She was content with having less to do and her will to learn more usually lasted up until lunchtime. She’d then go back to her usual routine of fielding an occasional call and working on invoices. He couldn’t recall invoices ever having taken that long before, but then again, he didn’t ever have to worry about what his last assistant did with her time.

“I was just about to give you a call,” Eddie said, greeting Charlie when he walked into the family room. “I got us some pizza for dinner and I didn’t know if you were going to be home soon or if I should start without you.”

“Yeah, sorry. I lost track of time. Thanks for ordering something,” Charlie said.

“Sure, no problem. You’ve been staying late a lot. Is that usual?” Eddie asked.

“It is these days. There just never seems to be an end to it.”

“Anything I can help with?” Eddie asked.

“I’ll manage,” Charlie said. “I’m going to run upstairs and get cleaned up. I’ll be back down in a minute.”

Even though Charlie wanted to take him up on his offer and Eddie seemed to sincerely want to help, he decided against it. Eddie had just gotten into town and the last thing he wanted to do was give him a reason to regret coming home. He’d made it clear that produce and the farm weren’t really his thing and if he made him feel obligated to any of it, it could turn out badly.
